Hurricane Claims Are Bigger Than They Look
After a hurricane, the obvious damage is often only part of the loss. Lifted shingles or cracked tiles can let water in for weeks, and wind pressure can damage windows, soffits, screens and interior finishes that are easy to miss.
Insurers send their adjusters to many homes after a storm, and inspections can be quick. Northside Adjusters takes the time to inspect every part of your home, so the claim includes all of the storm damage, not just the first things someone sees.
Florida policies usually carry a separate hurricane deductible, often a percentage of your dwelling coverage. We explain how it applies before the claim is filed.

First Steps After a Hurricane
- Make sure everyone is safe and stay away from downed lines.
- Photograph the outside and inside of the home before cleanup.
- Cover openings with tarps or boards and keep the receipts.
- Report the claim, then call us for a free inspection.
Wind and Storm Damage We Document
Wind, wind-driven rain and flying debris cause most hurricane claims.
Roof Damage
Missing shingles, cracked or lifted tiles, damaged underlayment and flashing. See roof leak claims.
Wind-Driven Rain
Water forced in through damaged roofs, windows and doors soaks ceilings and walls.
Fallen Trees and Debris
Trees, limbs and flying objects that strike the roof, walls, fences or screen enclosures.
Windows, Doors and Garage Doors
Broken glass, failed seals, bent tracks and damaged frames.
Screen Enclosures and Soffits
Torn screens, bent aluminum, damaged soffit and fascia.
Storm Surge
Surge is usually a flood claim, not a wind claim. See flood damage claims.
What Insurers Often Underpay or Deny
Hurricane claims are large and complex. These issues come up again and again.
Calling Wind Damage "Wear and Tear"
Insurers may say roof damage is old or from age. Photos, roof history and a close inspection help show what the storm did.
Repairs Instead of Replacement
A patch may be offered where matching materials are no longer available. Florida law addresses matching on homeowners claims (section 626.9744), and we check whether it applies.
Wind Versus Flood
When surge and wind both hit, insurers may assign too much damage to the policy that does not cover it.
Missed Interior and Contents Damage
Water stains, wet insulation, damaged flooring and personal property are often left out.

Hurricane Public Adjuster for Southwest Florida
Southwest Florida
Southwest Florida knows hurricanes. Charley came ashore near Punta Gorda in August 2004, and Ian made landfall at Cayo Costa on September 28, 2022, with damage across Cape Coral, Fort Myers and Naples.
South Florida
Homes in Miami-Dade and Broward face the same wind, rain and surge risks. We inspect South Florida homes in person and handle the full claim.
Hurricane Damage Claim Questions
What is a hurricane deductible?
It is a separate deductible for hurricane losses, often a percentage of your dwelling coverage instead of a fixed dollar amount. Your declarations page shows yours, and the policy explains when it applies.
Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane damage?
Most Florida homeowners policies cover wind damage, unless the policy has a wind exclusion. Flood and storm surge are usually covered only by a separate flood policy.
How long do I have to file a hurricane claim?
Florida law and your policy set deadlines for claims and supplemental claims (section 627.70132). Report the damage as soon as you can, and call us if you are unsure about a deadline.
What if the insurer says my roof damage is old?
Ask for their report. We inspect the roof, review its age and repair history, and document storm-related damage to show what the hurricane caused.
Should I make repairs before the adjuster comes?
Make temporary repairs to prevent more damage, like tarps and boarding, and keep the receipts. Hold off on permanent repairs until the damage has been documented.
Do you charge for the inspection?
No. The inspection is free. Our fee is a percentage of the settlement, capped by Florida law, and if there is no recovery, there is no fee.
