Smoke and Soot Claims

Smoke Damage Is Easy to Underestimate

Smoke moves through air ducts, wall cavities and closets, leaving soot and odor on surfaces, fabrics and electronics. Even a small kitchen fire can affect the whole home, and a fire in a neighboring unit or home can send smoke into yours.

Northside Adjusters documents where the smoke traveled and what it damaged, and makes sure the claim includes cleaning, sealing, replacement and contents, not just the room where the fire started.

Do not try to wipe heavy soot yourself. It can smear and set into surfaces. Photograph it and let a professional restoration company handle the cleaning.

First Steps After Smoke Damage

  1. Photograph soot on walls, ceilings, vents and belongings.
  2. Avoid running the AC until the system has been checked.
  3. Keep damaged items until they are documented.
  4. Report the claim, then call us for a free inspection.
Common Causes

Common Causes of Smoke Damage

Smoke damage claims often come with a fire claim, but not always.

Kitchen and House Fires

Smoke from a fire inside your home. See fire damage claims.

Fires Next Door

Smoke from a neighbor's home or a nearby condo unit.

Electrical Fires

Smoldering wiring or devices that fill rooms with smoke.

Appliance Malfunctions

Equipment failures that spread soot through the home.

Soot in the AC System

Soot pulled into the ducts and spread to every room.

Lingering Odor

Smoke odor that stays in drywall, insulation and fabrics.

Where Claims Go Wrong

What Insurers Often Underpay or Deny

Smoke claims are often scoped too narrowly.

  • Cleaning Only the Fire Room

Rooms that look clean can still hold soot and odor.

  • Cleaning Instead of Replacing

Some materials and items cannot be fully cleaned and need to be replaced.

  • HVAC Left Out

Ductwork and air handlers may need cleaning or replacement.

  • Contents Undervalued

Clothing, furniture, electronics and other items are often missed or priced too low.

Questions

Smoke Damage Claim Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover smoke damage?

Smoke damage from a sudden fire is usually covered. Smoke from normal, ongoing use, like a fireplace, usually is not. Your policy wording decides.

Is smoke damage covered if the fire was not in my home?

Often, yes. Smoke from a fire next door or in another unit can be part of a claim under your own policy.

Can smoke odor be part of a claim?

Yes. Odor that remains in materials and contents is part of the damage. Cleaning, sealing or replacement may be needed.

Do I need my air ducts cleaned?

If soot entered the HVAC system, the ducts and equipment may need cleaning or replacement. We include them in the inspection.

How do I document damaged belongings?

Photograph them, list the brand, model and age, and keep them until they are documented. We help you build the inventory.

What does it cost to hire you?

Our inspection is free. Our fee is a percentage of the settlement, capped by Florida law, and only if there is a recovery.

General information only, not legal advice. Your policy and Florida law govern your claim. Florida law and your policy set deadlines for claims and supplemental claims (section 627.70132). More answers on our FAQ page.
